AI: Your New Hebrew Study Buddy (When Used Right!)

Let’s be real—we’re all using AI these days. Or at least, most of us are. And truth be told? It’s actually a fantastic tool for language learning—provided you know how to wield it.

At Ulpan Aviv Bertele (UAB), we believe AI should complement a structured program, not replace it. It’s about enriching your vocabulary and getting that extra practice outside the classroom. Our personal favorite? Gemini. There’s something about the way it thinks—it feels deeper and more intuitive than many of its competitors.

Ready to level up your Hebrew? Here are three ways to use Gemini to boost your confidence:

1. Start a "Simple" Conversation

Even if you’re a beginner, don't be shy! Open a chat and start with the basics. Ask Gemini simple questions and have it respond.

  • Pro Tip: You might need to guide it a bit—tell Gemini to keep its language simple and match your level (it can be a bit "over-intellectual" sometimes!). It’s a great way to practice "real-world" flow without the pressure.

2. The "Word-a-Day" Challenge

Consistency is key. Ask Gemini to teach you one new verb, one preposition, or one conjunction every day. Even if you already know the word, the act of seeing it in context and practicing it will help you feel more comfortable and natural with the language.

3. The "Journaling" Method (For Intermediate Learners)

Try writing about your day or sharing a thought in Hebrew. Then, ask Gemini to ask you follow-up questions. The goal isn't to use high-level academic Hebrew or complex sentences—it’s about building the confidence to express yourself and keep the conversation going.

The Golden Rule: Don’t Use It as a Crutch

One important warning: Avoid using it for simple translations. Don’t ask Gemini (or Google Translate) for single words or to translate whole sentences from English to Hebrew. That bypasses the learning process and can actually lower your linguistic ceiling.

The secret is to use Hebrew to learn Hebrew. Use the AI to practice, to explain concepts in Hebrew, and to converse.

We’d love to hear from you! Have you tried practicing with Gemini yet? How did it go? Let us know in the comments!
