Who is Aviv
A Lifelong Love of Hebrew
"I have always had a great passion for the Hebrew language. In 2001, while working as a counselor for Jewish British and American students in Israel, I had the opportunity to stand in for a Hebrew teacher and it was then I realized I wanted to be able to share that passion with others. I have led courses at Tel Aviv University, where I earned an MA in Middle Eastern studies and a diploma in Hebrew language editing.
However, working as a journalist for Yedioth Acharonot meant it took me a few years to be able to begin teaching Hebrew as a second language.
I officially opened UAB - Ulpan Aviv Bertele in 2015. In 2018, the Ulpan moved to a new location fully designed by me. I've had the pleasure of teaching new immigrants, foreign diplomats and those looking to build their competency and confidence in speaking Hebrew as a second language.
Many students believe that private tutoring is the best way to learn Hebrew quickly and to gain confidence, I don't think this is true. I believe that teaching people in small, intimate groups led by intellectual discussions of Hebrew and Israeli culture is the best way to encounter and use the language in a genuine way."
