Service Description

Prerequisite: Initial Consultation with Aviv Bertele This course is designed for learners at Level Gimmel and above who wish to immerse themselves in the richness of contemporary Hebrew literature. This semester, we explore "שיעורים בפיתוח קול" (Lessons in Voice Development), the daring and deeply personal new novel by Dorit Rabinyan, her first since the international sensation Gader Chaya (All the Rivers). The story follows a brother and sister torn apart. Once inseparable, they have lived in silence for years. When the brother suddenly collapses, his sister is summoned to his bedside, only to face a haunting accusation: that her "excessive" love for him was the catalyst for his tragedy. In this masterpiece, Rabinyan investigates the thinnest of lines: The Boundaries of Love: At what point does familial devotion become a "forbidden" emotion? Fiction vs. Reality: The narrative weaves between a fictional, shelved manuscript and Rabinyan’s own family history, uncovering a secret involving a younger brother. As we progress, this "internal investigation" reveals layers of guilt, memory, and the power of finding one's voice after years of silence. Course Structure: Coursework involves collective reading sessions during class, with additional sections assigned for at-home study. Our discussions will analyze Rabinyan’s evocative prose and the psychological complexities that define her characters. Location & Materials: This course is conducted via Zoom, bringing our global community together. However, our home base remains at our fabulous Ulpan in Tel Aviv. The course fee includes a copy of the book (hard copy or digital—your choice) to be used throughout the course.
