Service Description

Prerequisite: Initial Consultation with Aviv Bertele This course is designed for advanced learners (Level Gimmel and above) who wish to immerse themselves in the richness of contemporary Hebrew literature. This semester, we will explore "המורה לעברית" (The Hebrew Teacher) by the acclaimed author Maya Arad. The novel masterfully details the intersecting lives of three women navigating the complexities of the Israeli-American experience. Ilana: A seasoned Hebrew professor in the Midwest who has built a "mini-empire" of Hebrew instruction. When a young, ambitious professor of Hebrew literature arrives, Ilana finds herself in a whirlwind of professional and political battles to defend her life's work. Miriam: A mother who travels to the U.S. to connect with her son’s family and her newborn grandchild, only to encounter unexpected revelations about her son’s life and the challenges of modern family dynamics. Efrat: An Israeli living in California, determined to help her daughter navigate the social hurdles of middle school. Her deep dive into her daughter’s online social networks crosses boundaries and unveils layers of hidden complexity. Maya Arad’s precise and insightful prose seamlessly blends humor and irony with a deep sensitivity toward her characters. Through these stories, she encourages her heroines to confront the gaps in their lives and find growth within their setbacks. Course Structure: The coursework involves collective reading during class sessions, supplemented by assigned sections for at-home study. Class discussions will delve into the book’s central themes, providing a comprehensive understanding of both the language and the cultural nuances. Location & Materials: This course is conducted via Zoom, allowing for a global classroom experience. However, the heart of our community remains at our fabulous Ulpan in Tel Aviv. The course fee includes a copy of the book (your choice of a hard copy or digital version) to be used throughout the semester.
