Service Description
Prerequisite: Initial Consultation with Aviv Bertele This course is designed for learners who have previously completed Level Gimmel or above and wish to immerse themselves in the richness of contemporary Hebrew literature. Our book of choice this semester is תמורה נאותה, the eleventh work by Maya Arad, winner of the 2024 Newman Prize for Hebrew Literature. In this new collection of novellas, Arad continues to refine and deepen her craft. These are tightly woven, brilliant, and deeply unsettling stories. Beyond the sophistication and wit her readers have come to expect, a new focus emerges: each story grapples with fundamental questions—good and evil, inequality, injustice. Arad refuses to offer easy or clear-cut answers. These are stories you can’t put down—stories that will stay with you long after you've turned the last page. Coursework involves collective reading sessions during class, with additional sections assigned for at-home study. Class discussions will delve into various themes found in the book, providing a comprehensive understanding. This course is conducted via the Zoom app and includes a copy of the book that is read during the course.
