Service Description

Prerequisite: Initial Consultation with Aviv Bertele This course is designed for learners who have previously completed Level Gimmerl or above and wish to immerse themselves in the richness of contemporary Hebrew literature. Our chosen book for this semester is "שנים טובות" written by the profound author Maya Arad. In the summer of 1967, Leah, a young graduate of a teachers' seminar, travels to try her luck in America. Soon, a tradition is established: every year, around Rosh Hashanah, Leah writes to her friends from the seminar and tells them about her experiences over the past year. The search for happiness and wealth proves to be elusive. Leah is a beautiful woman. Very beautiful. Men court her – and break her heart. The dreams of financial stability also repeatedly face the same reality: the streets of America are not paved with gold. "Good Years" is a unique epistolary novel: not an exchange of letters, but a series of "Happy New Year" greetings spanning an entire lifetime, from youth to old age, at regular one-year intervals. This work is filled with wit and irony, inviting readers to a kind of detective and psychological game of reading between the lines: to decipher what is said and infer from it what is not said. As we read, we find ourselves captivated by the unfolding life story: year after year, from challenge to challenge, Leah reveals herself to us as a woman full of optimism, resourcefulness, and joy of life. The coursework involves collective reading portions during class, with the remaining sections assigned for at-home study. Class discussions will delve into various themes found in the book, providing a comprehensive understanding. This course is conducted via the Zoom app and includes a copy of the book (hard copy or digital—your choice) that is read during the course.
